Portion
To burn it off

Soy milk is made from soya beans and water. Of all the plant milks, it's the one closest to cow's milk for protein.
An unsweetened glass is about 80 kcal, with 8 g of protein, 1 g of carbs and 5 g of fat. That's light for the protein you get.
The sweetened and flavoured cartons are a different story, with sugar added. Look for unsweetened on the front.
Tips
Where it comes from
Soy milk comes from China. Food historians William Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi of the Soyinfo Center traced the first clear written record to around 1365, when it was called doufujiang, a liquid made on the way to tofu. It probably only became an everyday drink there centuries later, and it reached Europe and America in the early 1900s.

Questions
Is soy milk lower than cow's milk?
Unsweetened soy usually is a bit lower than semi skimmed, with a similar amount of protein.
How many calories in a splash of soy milk in tea?
Next to nothing, a splash is a few kcal.
Is sweetened soy milk much higher?
It has added sugar, so yes, higher than the 80 kcal of unsweetened. Check the carton.
Is barista soy milk higher in calories?
Usually a bit, because a little oil and sometimes sugar is added so it froths well. Many barista cartons are around 100 kcal per 250 ml, so check the label.
Why does soy milk curdle in coffee?
Hot, acidic coffee makes the soy protein clump together. Pour the soy milk in first or let the coffee cool a little, and the calories stay the same either way.
