330 ml of amber kombucha with a few fine bubbles in a clear glass

Kombucha is fermented sweet tea. The culture eats most of the sugar, which leaves 11 g of carbs and a fizzy, slightly sour drink.

A bottle is 45 kcal, which is light next to most fizzy drinks. Some brands add juice, and those are sweeter.

It's a decent swap for a can of pop at lunch. Whether it does anything for your gut is a separate question, so just drink it because you like it.

Tips

  1. 1Check the label, the flavoured ones with juice are sweeter.
  2. 2Use it as the mixer instead of tonic or lemonade.
  3. 3Pour it over ice and make the bottle last two glasses.

Where it comes from

Kombucha's origins are cloudy. Popular stories place it in China in 221 BC or in Japan with a doctor called Kombu, but there is no evidence for either. The first solid reports come from Russia and Ukraine in the late 1800s, and from there it spread to the rest of Eastern Europe and to Germany. It has also been called Manchurian tea.

Questions

Is kombucha high in sugar?

Not very. A bottle has about 11 g of carbs, much less than a can of cola.

Does kombucha have alcohol in it?

Only a trace from the fermenting, in the shop bought ones. Home brew can be stronger.

How many calories in two bottles?

About 90 kcal.

Does kombucha have caffeine?

A little, from the tea it's brewed with. Usually far less than a cup of coffee.

Does kombucha need to be kept in the fridge?

Yes, keep it cold. Out of the fridge it keeps fermenting, so it gets more sour, more fizzy and a touch more alcoholic.
