Calorie calculator
Most adults need about 1800 to 2600 kcal a day. Fill in your numbers below and you get yours, for losing, keeping or gaining.
How much you move
Goal
This uses the Mifflin St Jeor formula, the one dietitians use most: what your body burns resting, times how much you move. It is an estimate, usually within about 10 percent for most people.
To lose about half a kilo a week you eat around 550 kcal less than you burn. That pace is slow enough that you keep your muscle and don't feel hungry all the time.
The number is a starting point, not a rule. Track for two weeks, look at what your weight does, and move it up or down by 100 or 200.
Just type it
In Caltype you type what you ate like a note to yourself, and it's counted for you. No weighing, no scrolling through a database.
Questions
How accurate is a calorie calculator?
For most people it lands within about 10 percent. Your real number shows after two weeks of logging: if your weight stays the same, that is what you burn.
Should I eat back the calories from a workout?
Some of them. Caltype adds a logged workout back to your day, because a hard day of training is not the day to eat less.
What is the lowest I should go?
Not below about 1500 kcal for men and 1200 for women without a doctor. Lower than that makes it hard to get enough protein and the rest.
