A croissant is mostly butter folded into dough, over and over, and that's exactly why it's lovely. It's light to hold and rich to eat.

A small one is 170 kcal. Fill it with ham and cheese and it goes up to 400, which is basically lunch.

It won't keep you full for long on its own. Have it with a coffee and enjoy it, then don't expect it to last till noon.

Tips

  1. 1Go for the smaller one from the supermarket bakery when you want one most mornings.
  2. 2Have it with something with protein, like a yoghurt, so it carries you further.

Where it comes from

The croissant began as the Austrian kipferl, a crescent shaped bread known since at least the 13th century. Around 1838 or 1839 August Zang, a former Austrian artillery officer, opened a Viennese bakery in Paris, and French bakers copied it and named it after its crescent, croissant. The story that it was invented after the 1683 siege of Vienna is a legend.

Questions

Is a croissant more than a slice of toast?

Usually yes, because of the butter in the dough. That's also why it tastes better.

How many calories in a ham and cheese croissant?

About 400 kcal, with 16 g of protein.

Does an almond croissant have more?

Yes, the almond filling and sugar add a fair bit on top of a plain one. Count it as more than the 250 here.

How many calories in a croissant with butter and jam?

A bakery croissant is 250 kcal. A pat of butter adds about 35 and a tablespoon of jam about 50, so the full French breakfast version is around 335.

Does a day old croissant have fewer calories?

No. It goes soft or dry because it loses water, not calories, so it's still 250. A few minutes in the oven brings the crunch back without adding anything.
