A G&T has two halves. The gin is alcohol and nothing else, the tonic is sweeter than it tastes and brings 18 g of sugar.

A single with ordinary tonic is 158 kcal. Swap to light tonic and it's 92, make it a double and it's 246.

Three on a summer evening is 474. Lovely, and worth knowing before the fourth.

Tips

  1. 1Ask for slimline or light tonic. It's 66 kcal less a glass and most people can't tell.
  2. 2Have a single in a big glass with lots of ice, it lasts longer than a double.
  3. 3Alternate with a sparkling water and lime, it looks the same in your hand.

Where it comes from

In 19th century British India, soldiers and officials took quinine against malaria. It was so bitter that they mixed it with soda water and sugar, and then with their gin ration. Tonic water went on sale in 1858, and the first known mention of a gin and tonic, in the Oriental Sporting Magazine in 1868, already treats it as a drink for the races. Today's tonic has far less quinine.
