Portion
To burn it off

Fish and chips is white fish in batter, deep fried, with a pile of thick cut chips. The fish is lean, the batter and the chips bring most of the fat.
A regular from the chippy is 1,000 kcal. A small portion is 650, and it's often plenty.
Mushy peas add a bit, salt and vinegar add nothing. Curry sauce, that's another number.
Tips
- 1Go for the small portion, or share the chips.
- 2Peel off some of the batter, the fish underneath is the bit worth having.
Where it comes from
Fried fish came to Britain with Jewish immigrants from Spain, Portugal and later Eastern Europe, who coated it in flour and fried it the Portuguese way. Dickens mentions fried fish warehouses in Oliver Twist in 1838. The fish and the chips were sold separately for years before anyone put them together, in Joseph Malin's shop in London's East End around 1860 and John Lees's in Mossley, Lancashire, in 1863.
