Half a litre of pale lager with a thick white head in a beer glass

Most of the calories in beer come from the alcohol, the rest from leftover malt sugar. Stronger beer means more of both.

A bottle is 140 kcal, half a litre is 215 and a British pint is 245. Four pints on a Friday is 980, which is roughly a whole pizza.

It's not the beer alone, it's what happens at the kebab shop afterwards. Worth knowing before the third round.

Tips

  1. 1Have a halfie or a bottle instead of a pint for the rounds you don't really want.
  2. 2Alternate with a pint of water, or try an alcohol free one, they've got a lot better.
  3. 3Swap one round for an alcohol free beer: half a litre is about 100 kcal instead of 215.

Where it comes from

People were brewing long before they baked bread in ovens. In Raqefet Cave in Israel, a team led by Stanford archaeologist Li Liu found traces of a beer made from wheat or barley about 13,000 years ago, probably for feasts honouring the dead. Some archaeologists think the traces could come from bread making instead, so the debate is still open.

Questions

How many calories in a pint of beer?

About 245 kcal for an ordinary lager. Strong craft beers are more.

Is beer or wine higher?

A pint of beer is 245 kcal and a standard glass of wine is 125, so per drink, the pint is higher.

Is alcohol free beer lower?

Yes, much lower, because most of beer's calories come from the alcohol. An alcohol free bottle is about 70 kcal against 140 for a regular one, and half a litre is about 100 against 215.

Is light beer lower?

A little. A bottle of light beer is about 100 kcal, against 140 for a regular bottle.

Does beer have carbs?

Yes, about 18 g in half a litre, from the malt. There's no fat at all.

How many calories in a pint of Guinness?

About 200 kcal, a little under the 245 of a regular pint of lager. It looks heavy, but it is lighter on alcohol than most lagers.

Does a shandy have fewer calories than beer?

Not as many fewer as you'd hope. It's half beer and half lemonade, so the sugar in the lemonade replaces much of the alcohol you skipped. Made with diet lemonade, it really is lighter.
