Where it comes from
People have warmed and spiced wine for a very long time. The Romans already flavoured wine with honey and spices, and in medieval Europe a sweet spiced wine called hippocras, made with long pepper, ginger and cinnamon, was drunk partly as medicine. Its name probably points to the Greek doctor Hippocrates. The German name Glühwein simply means glow wine.

Questions
Is mulled wine higher than normal wine?
Yes. A mug is about 200 kcal and a standard glass of wine about 125, mostly because of the sugar.
How many calories in two mugs of mulled wine?
About 400 kcal.
Does heating it burn off the alcohol?
Only a little. Most of the alcohol is still there if it's just warmed up.
Do the spices in mulled wine add calories?
Next to none. Cinnamon, cloves and star anise add the flavour, the calories come from the wine and the sugar or honey stirred in.
Is mulled wine made with honey lower than with sugar?
About the same, or a touch more. A tablespoon of honey is around 60 kcal, a tablespoon of sugar about 50.
