Heineken is a standard Dutch lager, and like any beer most of its calories come from the alcohol. A bottle has 11 g of carbs and 1 g of protein, and no fat.

A bottle is 140 kcal and a 500 ml can is 210. Four bottles at the pub is 560, roughly a Big Mac and a bit.

Heineken 0.0 is much lower, because there's no alcohol in it. The numbers can differ a little by country.

Tips

  1. 1Have a Heineken 0.0 for every other round.
  2. 2Get bottles rather than the big cans, they're easier to keep count of.
  3. 3Drink a pint of water before you head to the bar.

Where it comes from

Heineken began on 15 February 1864, when 22 year old Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought De Hooiberg, the Haystack, an Amsterdam brewery dating back to 1592. In 1886 Dr Hartog Elion, a pupil of Louis Pasteur, developed the Heineken A-yeast in the company's own lab, and that yeast is still used in the beer today.
