A piña colada is rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, so you get alcohol, sugar and fat all in one glass. It's closer to a pudding than a drink.

One is about 490 kcal, with 60 g of carbs and 16 g of fat. Two by the pool is 980, about the same as a big meal.

It's a holiday drink and that's fine. Just know it's the big one on the cocktail list.

Tips

  1. 1Have one, then switch to something lighter like a G&T.
  2. 2Ask for a smaller glass or share a jug.
  3. 3Ask for less coconut cream and more pineapple juice.

Where it comes from

The Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, says its bartender Ramón Monchito Marrero created the piña colada in 1954, after three months of trying out rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice. Other bartenders in Puerto Rico have claimed it too, so the story is disputed. Either way, it has been Puerto Rico's official drink since 1978.

Questions

Why is a piña colada so high?

The coconut cream brings the fat and the pineapple juice and sugar bring the carbs, on top of the rum.

How many calories in two piña coladas?

About 980 kcal.

Is a virgin piña colada a lot lower?

Lower, yes, because the rum is gone, but the coconut cream and the juice still add up.

Is a piña colada made with coconut milk lower in calories?

Yes, lower. Coconut milk has no added sugar, while the cream of coconut most bars use is sweetened.

Does a frozen piña colada have fewer calories?

Not really. Blending it with ice makes it colder and bigger, but the rum, coconut and juice are the same, so it's still about 490 kcal.
