Portion
To burn it off

Carrot cake has carrots in it, which is nice, but it's a proper cake. It's usually made with oil and topped with cream cheese frosting.
A slice is 420 kcal, with 50 g of carbs, 22 g of fat and 4 g of protein. That's one of the heavier slices in the café cabinet.
Much of that is the frosting and the oil in the sponge. The walnuts add a little more, and the carrot adds very little.
Tips
- 1Share a slice with whoever you're having coffee with.
- 2Scrape off some of the frosting if the sponge is what you're after.
- 3Pick it on the days you really want cake, not as a default.
Where it comes from
Carrots sweetened puddings long before sugar was cheap, and an early carrot pudding is known from 10th century Baghdad. The carrot cake we know took shape in the late 1930s. In wartime Britain, with sugar and fat rationed, the Ministry of Food pushed carrots, and its War Cookery Leaflet No. 4 of July 1943 printed a carrot cake recipe.

Questions
Is carrot cake healthier because of the carrots?
Not really. A slice is 420 kcal, one of the bigger slices out there.
How much fat is in carrot cake?
About 22 g a slice, from the oil and the frosting.
How many calories in half a slice?
About 210 kcal.
Does carrot cake count towards your five a day?
No. There's only a little grated carrot in each slice, far less than the 80 g that counts as a portion of veg.
Is carrot cake made with oil higher than one made with butter?
Close either way. Gram for gram oil is slightly higher, since butter has some water in it, but recipes use similar amounts, so the slice ends up about the same.
