Three French macarons in soft pastel colors on a white plate

A macaron is ground almonds, egg white and a lot of sugar, with buttercream or ganache in the middle. Three have 27 g of carbs, 10 g of fat and 4 g of protein.

They look tiny, and at about 70 kcal each they are fairly small. It's the box of six that turns into 420.

The flavour doesn't change much. Pistachio, raspberry or salted caramel all land in the same range.

Tips

  1. 1Buy two or three good ones instead of a big box of average ones.
  2. 2Have them with coffee and actually sit down for it.
  3. 3Share the box, it's what they're for.

Where it comes from

Almond sweets made with egg white were around in Italy and France since the Middle Ages, and the name probably comes from the Italian maccarone, meaning a fine paste. The story that Catherine de Medici brought macarons to France when she married in 1533 is charming but undocumented. The filled double macaron was made famous in Paris in the 20th century by Pierre Desfontaines of Ladurée.
