How many calories in butter
Butter spread on one slice of bread has about 72 kcal, all of it from fat.
Portion
To burn it off

Butter is almost pure fat, which is why it tastes so good and why a little goes a long way. There's no protein or carbs in it worth counting.
A normal spread on one slice is about 72 kcal. Two slices of toast is 144 in butter alone, before the jam or the bread.
The bit people miss is the butter in cooking. A knob in the pan or on the veg counts just the same.
Tips
- 1Let it soften first, so you spread it thin instead of in lumps.
- 2Butter one slice properly and leave the other for the jam or Marmite.
- 3Use a spray of oil for frying and save the butter for the toast you'll taste it on.
Where it comes from
Butter is one of the oldest dairy foods there is. It already appears in the very first written records of Mesopotamia, from the late fourth millennium BC, more than 5,000 years ago, where it was eaten in sweets with dates and also rubbed on as an ointment. The English word goes back to the Greek boutyron, which seems to mean cow cheese, though that may be a folk reading of a Scythian word.
