A burger is a bun, a beef patty and whatever goes on top. In a restaurant that's a thick patty, cheese, sauce and a brioche bun, which is where the number climbs.
A restaurant burger is about 700 kcal, with 38 g of protein, 45 g of carbs and 40 g of fat. A small plain hamburger from a fast food place is 250.
The burger is rarely the whole story. Chips, onion rings and a milkshake on the side can easily double it.
Tips
- 1Get it with a side salad or share the chips instead of having your own.
- 2Skip the extra sauce and bacon, keep the cheese if that's the bit you love.
- 3Go for a single patty, a double adds a lot more than you'd guess.
Where it comes from
Nobody knows who made the first burger. The name points to the German port of Hamburg, and Britannica says the patty and the sandwich were probably brought to the United States by 19th century German immigrants. Several Americans claim the bun, from fair stands in Wisconsin and New York in 1885 to Louis Lassen, said to have served a beef sandwich in New Haven in 1900.
