Portion
To burn it off

Poutine is chips topped with squeaky cheese curds and hot gravy, from Quebec. It's basically the posh cousin of cheesy chips and gravy from the chippy.
A portion is about 750 kcal, with 22 g of protein, 80 g of carbs and 38 g of fat. The fries are most of the carbs, the cheese and the frying most of the fat.
It's a meal in its own right, not a side. Ordering it next to a burger is how the night really adds up.
Tips
- 1Share a portion as a side rather than having one each.
- 2Have it as the meal, not next to a burger.
- 3Ask for a smaller portion if they do one.
Where it comes from
Poutine comes from rural Quebec in the late 1950s, and more than one town claims it. Fernand Lachance of Warwick said a regular asked him for cheese curds on his fries in 1957, while Jean-Paul Roy of Drummondville said he created it at his drive in in 1964. In Quebec slang poutine means a mess, probably from the English word pudding.

Questions
Is poutine the same as cheesy chips and gravy?
Close. Poutine uses cheese curds instead of grated cheese, and lands at about 750 kcal a portion.
How much protein is in poutine?
About 22 g, mostly from the cheese.
How many calories in half a poutine?
About 375 kcal.
Is poutine gluten free?
Usually not. The gravy is normally thickened with flour and the fries often share a fryer with battered food. Some places do a gluten free version, so ask.
Why do the cheese curds in poutine squeak?
Fresh curds squeak because their protein is still tightly packed and rubs against your teeth. After a day or so in the fridge they lose it, which is why good places use them fresh.
