Portion
To burn it off

Gyros is meat cooked on a turning spit, shaved off and wrapped in a warm pita with tomato, onion, tzatziki and, in Greece, a few chips. The holiday lunch that costs almost nothing.
One is 600 kcal, with 28 g of protein, 55 g of carbs and 30 g of fat. Pork is the classic in Greece, chicken comes in a little lower.
A gyros plate with a pile of chips, pitta and salad is a different thing and a lot more. Count that as a pita and a half at least.
Tips
- 1Ask for it without the chips inside, it's still a proper gyros.
- 2Go for chicken instead of pork.
- 3Share a Greek salad on the side instead of a second one.
Where it comes from
Meat roasted on an upright turning spit is credited to a 19th century butcher named İskender in Bursa, in the Ottoman Empire, whose döner kebab spread to its neighbours. In Greece it became gyros, which means turn, the same meaning as the Turkish döner. By 1970 gyros wraps were already everyday fast food in Athens, and in Chicago and New York too.
