Portion
To burn it off

A spring roll is a crispy pastry wrapper filled with cabbage, carrot, bean sprouts and sometimes pork or prawn, then deep fried. It's the starter on every Chinese takeaway menu.
Two come to 250 kcal, with 5 g of protein, 28 g of carbs and 13 g of fat. Most of that fat is the frying oil.
The sweet chilli sauce adds a bit more, mostly sugar. Fresh Vietnamese rice paper rolls are a different thing and much lighter.
Tips
- 1Order fresh summer rolls instead when they're on the menu.
- 2Share the starter, two each across a table is plenty.
- 3Dip rather than drench in sweet chilli.
Where it comes from
Spring rolls grew out of the thin spring pancakes the Chinese ate at the start of spring, wrapped around fresh vegetables to welcome the season and wish for a good harvest. Over time the pancakes were rolled up and fried, and in the Qing dynasty spring rolls were among the dim sum served at imperial banquets. The Chinese name, chun juan, simply means spring roll.
