How many calories in naan
A plain naan bread has about 260 kcal, most of it from carbs.
Portion
To burn it off
Naan is a soft, leavened flatbread baked in a tandoor and the thing you tear up to mop the curry. In a British curry house one is often the size of a dinner plate.
A plain one is 260 kcal, with 45 g of carbs and 5 g of fat. Brush it with garlic butter and it's 320, the extra 60 almost all butter.
Peshwari and keema naans are filled and come in higher still. Count them as more than a plain one.
Tips
- 1Share one naan between two instead of one each.
- 2Pick naan or rice with your curry, not both.
- 3Go for a chapati or roti now and then, they're much thinner.
Where it comes from
Naan simply means bread in Persian. It came to South Asia with the Delhi Sultanate, and around 1300 the poet Amir Khusrau described two kinds eaten by nobles, a light thin one and a heavier one baked in the tandoor. Under the Mughals it was a luxury of the court, and only by the 1700s did it reach ordinary people in the big cities.
