How many calories in rice
A plate of cooked rice has about 260 kcal: 57 g of carbs, 5 g of protein and almost no fat.
Portion
To burn it off

Rice is mostly starch and water once it's cooked, with a little protein and almost no fat. That's why it fills the plate without doing much to your numbers on its own.
A full plate is 260 kcal and a side portion is 195, so the gap is 65 kcal. With a curry or a stir fry, it's the sauce that usually decides the total, not the rice.
Fried rice from the takeaway is a different story, because it's cooked in oil. Log it as fried rice and Caltype counts it as such.

Tips
- 1Go half rice, half veg on the plate. Same size, fewer kcal.
- 2Ask for plain boiled rice instead of egg fried rice with your takeaway.
- 3Cook a bit less than the packet says. Most of us make far too much anyway.
- 4Cooked a big pot? Cool the rest quickly, keep it in the fridge and eat it the next day.
Where it comes from
Asian rice was first domesticated in China, and the earliest evidence, from central and eastern China, dates to around 7000 to 5000 BC. Early rice growing is also known from India and Southeast Asia, and Asia still grows more than 90 percent of the world's rice. Africa has its own species, African rice, which was domesticated separately in West Africa.

Questions
Does brown rice have fewer calories than white?
Barely. It has a bit more fibre, so it fills you up for longer, but the kcal are close.
Is rice good for losing weight?
It can fit fine. A plate is 260 kcal with almost no fat. What usually tips the meal over is the sauce or the oil, and a side portion instead of a full plate saves 65.
How many calories in chicken and rice?

Does rice have fat?
Hardly any, about 1 g a plate. Any fat comes from what you cook it in or put on it.

How much dry rice makes a plate?
About 70 to 75 g of uncooked rice makes a full plate of cooked rice, around 260 kcal.
Does cooled rice have fewer calories?
A little of the starch changes as cooked rice cools, but the difference is small. Log it the same.
