How many calories in mozzarella
A 125 g ball of mozzarella has 313 kcal, with 23 g of protein and 24 g of fat.
Portion
To burn it off

Mozzarella is a fresh cheese with a lot of water in it, so it's lighter per gram than cheddar. It's still protein and fat with next to no carbs.
A whole ball is 313 kcal with 23 g of protein. Half a ball on a tomato salad is a bit over 150.
Where it adds up is on top of things. Pizza, lasagne and a melted panini all lean on it.
Tips
- 1Use half a ball in a caprese and pile up the tomatoes and basil.
- 2Tear it into small pieces on a pizza, it spreads further than slices.
- 3Try light mozzarella if you use it every week, it melts much the same.
Where it comes from
Mozzarella comes from Campania in southern Italy and was first made from water buffalo milk. The story goes that around the 12th century the monks of San Lorenzo in Capua gave pilgrims bread with a buffalo cheese called mozza. The name comes from mozzare, to cut off, as each ball is cut from the curd, and it first appears in print in 1570, in a book by the papal cook Bartolomeo Scappi.

Questions
How many calories in half a ball of mozzarella?
About 157 kcal for half a 125 g ball.
How much protein is in mozzarella?
About 23 g in a whole ball.
Is burrata the same?
No, burrata has a creamy middle, so it's richer than plain mozzarella.
Is pizza mozzarella the same as a fresh ball?
Not quite. The block or grated kind sold for pizza is low moisture, so it's drier and has more calories per gram than a fresh ball sitting in its liquid.
Do I keep the liquid in a mozzarella bag?
Keep the ball in it until you use it, it stays soft that way. Then drain it and pat it dry, the salty whey itself is nothing you need to count.
