How many calories in a tomato
A medium tomato has 22 kcal, mostly from natural sugar.
Portion
To burn it off

A tomato is mostly water with a little natural sugar and fibre. Lots of flavour for very little.
A medium one is 22 kcal. A handful of cherry tomatoes on the side of your lunch is barely a number.
Ketchup, sun dried tomatoes in oil and creamy tomato soups are where the calories show up, not the fresh tomato.
Tips
- 1Grill halved tomatoes with your fry up instead of an extra sausage.
- 2Keep a punnet of cherry tomatoes on the table as a snack.
- 3Slice them thick into a sandwich so you need less filling.
Where it comes from
The wild tomato comes from the Andes, mainly Peru and Ecuador, but it was domesticated in Mexico, and its name comes from the Aztec word tomatl. Spanish explorers brought it to Europe in the early 1500s. Italians called it pomodoro, golden apple, perhaps because the first ones were yellow, while many northern Europeans long distrusted it, because it belongs to the nightshade family.
