Portion
To burn it off

Skyr is an Icelandic strained dairy, thick like Greek yoghurt but made from skimmed milk. That's why it's high in protein and has no fat.
A plain pot is 95 kcal with 17 g of protein. It's one of the cheapest ways to get protein into a breakfast without trying.
The flavoured pots are where it changes. Fruit and sugar get added, so the plain one with your own fruit is the lower one.
Tips
- 1Buy the big plain tub and add berries and a few oats yourself.
- 2Use it in overnight oats instead of milk for a thicker, fuller bowl.
- 3Mix in a bit of honey if it's too sour, a teaspoon is plenty.
Where it comes from
Skyr seems to have been made in Iceland ever since the Norse settled it in the 9th century, and back then a dairy food with the same name was known across all the Nordic countries. Only Iceland kept the tradition going. The settlers' skyr was probably sourer and thinner than the thick pots sold today, which changed most when factory production took over in the last century.

How do you pronounce skyr?
Like skeer, rhyming with here. In Icelandic the r at the end is rolled a little, but nobody at the supermarket will mind.
