To burn it off

Halloumi is the Cypriot cheese that squeaks and doesn't melt, so you can grill it. Two slices have 18 g of protein and 20 g of fat.
It's the go to for vegetarians at a barbecue, and fair enough, it's properly filling.
Halloumi fries are another matter. They're breaded and deep fried, so they come out a lot higher than the grilled slices.
Tips
- 1Grill or dry fry it, it doesn't need any oil.
- 2Two slices in a wrap with lots of salad and some hot sauce is a whole lunch.
- 3Slice it thinner and you'll get more pieces out of one block.
Where it comes from
Halloumi is Cyprus's cheese, first written down there around 1554 by a Venetian official who called it calumi. Similar cheeses are made around the eastern Mediterranean, so exactly where it began is still debated. The name probably goes back through Arabic and Coptic to an ancient Egyptian word for cheese. Since 2021 the EU protects it as Cypriot.
