How many calories in feta
A portion of feta, about a quarter of a block, has around 130 kcal.
Portion
To burn it off

Feta is the salty white Greek cheese made from sheep's milk, sometimes with goat's. A portion has 11 g of fat and 7 g of protein.
It's lighter than hard cheeses like cheddar, and so salty that a little crumbled over something tastes like a lot.
On holiday in Greece the Greek salad comes with a whole slab on top, which is easily more than a portion. Plus the olive oil it's sitting in.
Tips
- 1Crumble it rather than slicing it, it spreads further.
- 2Mix it with watermelon and mint in summer for something that feels like a treat.
- 3Ask for the dressing on the side with a Greek salad, the oil adds up faster than the cheese.
Where it comes from
Feta comes from Greece, where shepherds have made brined white cheese from sheep's and goat's milk for thousands of years. In Homer's Odyssey the Cyclops Polyphemus makes a sheep's milk cheese that was probably a forerunner. The name is younger and probably comes from the Italian fetta, a slice. Since 2002 only feta from parts of Greece may carry the name in the EU.
