How many calories in watermelon
A big slice of watermelon has 90 kcal, and most of it is water.
Portion
To burn it off

The name says it all: watermelon is mostly water, with a bit of natural sugar for the sweetness. That's why it's so refreshing on a hot day.
A big wedge is 90 kcal and a bowl of chunks is 60. You'd have to work quite hard to make watermelon a big part of your day.
It's one of the easiest ways to feel like you've had a proper dessert at a barbecue without much of a number at the end.
Tips
- 1Cut a whole one into chunks and keep a tub in the fridge.
- 2Blend it with ice and lime for a cold drink in summer.
- 3Bring it to the barbecue, everyone will eat it.
Where it comes from
Watermelon comes from northeast Africa. A 2021 study found its closest wild relative is the Kordofan melon of Sudan, which has pale, non bitter flesh people can eat raw. That fits a 4,300 year old Egyptian tomb painting at Saqqara showing a big green striped melon among other sweet fruits. For about 150 years, scientists had wrongly placed its origin in South Africa.
