How many calories in yoghurt
A pot of plain whole milk yoghurt has about 95 kcal, and a fruit yoghurt about 150.
Portion
To burn it off
Plain yoghurt is milk that's been fermented, so it's thick and a bit sour. A pot has 5 g of protein, 7 g of carbs and 5 g of fat.
Fruit yoghurt is 55 kcal more, and the difference is almost all sugar: 22 g of carbs against 7.
Neither is a problem. It's just worth knowing that the strawberry one is closer to a pudding than the plain one.
Tips
- 1Buy plain and stir in your own fruit or a drizzle of honey, you control the sugar.
- 2Greek style or skyr gives you more protein if that's what you're after.
- 3Use it instead of sour cream on chilli or a jacket potato.
Where it comes from
Nobody knows who made the first yoghurt. Milk probably soured and thickened by itself in warm pots thousands of years ago, likely somewhere in Western Asia, possibly in what is now Turkey. The word comes from Turkish yoğurt, linked to a verb for thickening. In 1905 Bulgarian Stamen Grigorov found the bacterium that does the work, still named after Bulgaria.
