Sweetcorn is starch and natural sugar with a little protein and fibre. Sweet, filling and great on the barbecue.

One cob is 90 kcal on its own. It's the butter melting down the side that adds up.

A tin of sweetcorn is handy too. Scatter some in a salad or a wrap for a bit of sweetness.

Tips

  1. 1Grill it until it's charred so it needs less butter.
  2. 2Try a squeeze of lime and a pinch of chilli instead.
  3. 3Go for mini cobs if you want two.

Where it comes from

Corn, or maize, was bred in southern Mexico around 10,000 years ago from Balsas-teosinte, a wild grass whose small hard ears look nothing like a cob. Native Americans spread it as far north as southern Maine before Europeans arrived. Columbus and the explorers after him took it to Europe, and the word maize comes through Spanish from mahiz, a word of the Taíno people of the Caribbean.
