How many calories in a sweet potato
A medium sweet potato has 135 kcal, almost all of it from carbs.
Portion
To burn it off

Sweet potato is starch and natural sugar with a decent bit of fibre and almost no fat. Sweet, filling and easy to cook.
A medium one is 135 kcal. A plain jacket potato is 220, so it's a bit lower, though it's often a smaller potato too.
Sweet potato fries are another matter. Once they're fried, they're about the same as normal chips.

Tips
- 1Bake it whole and fill it with chilli or black beans.
- 2Roast wedges with a little oil and smoked paprika.
- 3Mash it with a pinch of salt and pepper, it doesn't need butter.
Where it comes from
Sweet potato was domesticated in tropical Central or South America and was being grown there at least 5,000 years ago. Spanish sailors took it to Europe, where it was the first plant called potato, from the Caribbean word batata. Surprisingly, it was already on Pacific islands centuries before Europeans arrived, and the Polynesian kumara sounds very like the Quechua name, a clue to early contact with South America.
