Broccoli is mostly water and fibre, with more protein than most veg. It fills up a plate for very little.

A portion is 53 kcal. You could have a double helping and it'd still be barely a dent in your day.

What goes on it is what counts. A knob of butter or a cheese sauce can be more than the broccoli itself.

Where it comes from

Broccoli comes from the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor and has been grown in Italy since Roman times. Its name is Italian: broccoli is the plural of broccolo, a cabbage sprout, from brocco, a shoot. It reached England and America in the 1700s, but it only became common in the US after Italian immigrants, the D'Arrigo brothers, started growing it in California in the 1920s.
