Portion
To burn it off

Cherries are water, natural sugar and a little fibre. Sweet ones in summer taste like sweets, and they're nowhere near the number.
A bowl is 95 kcal. The stones slow you down, which is no bad thing.
Glacé cherries in a cake are a different story, they're soaked in sugar. Fresh ones are what this page is about.
Tips
- 1Buy them when they're in season, they're sweeter and cheaper.
- 2Have a bowl after dinner instead of something from the biscuit tin.
- 3Freeze pitted ones for smoothies.
Where it comes from
Sweet cherries come from the lands between the Caspian Sea and the Balkans, and the best early ones grew in Pontus, on the Black Sea coast of Anatolia. The story goes, as told by the Roman writer Pliny, that the general Lucullus brought cherry trees to Rome from there in the 70s BC. The word goes back to Greek kerasos, and English cherry lost its final s because cherise sounded like a plural.
