Portion
To burn it off
Papaya is soft, sweet and mostly water. On holiday in Asia it's on every breakfast buffet, usually with a wedge of lime.
A bowl is about 65 kcal, with 16 g of carbs and next to no fat. That's a lot of fruit for very little.
Back home it's pricier and often less ripe, but a good one is worth it. Squeeze lime over it, it makes a big difference.
Tips
Where it comes from
Papaya was first domesticated in Mesoamerica, in what is now southern Mexico and Central America, where wild papayas still grow. The Spanish chronicler Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo described it in the early 1500s, and the Spanish soon carried the seeds across the Caribbean and on to the Old World. Today it grows across almost all of the tropics.
