Pineapple is water and natural sugar with a little fibre and that sharp bite on your tongue. Lots of flavour, not many calories.

A bowl of chunks is 100 kcal and a single slice is 40. A whole pineapple goes a long way between a few people.

Tinned in juice is close to fresh. Tinned in syrup has extra sugar, so check the label on the tin.

Tips

  1. 1Buy a ready cut tub if peeling a whole one feels like too much faff.
  2. 2Grill a few slices on the barbecue for a warm dessert.
  3. 3Pick tins in juice rather than syrup.

Where it comes from

Pineapple is native to tropical South America and was grown across the Americas long before Europeans arrived. Columbus met it on Guadeloupe in 1493. The Spanish called it piña for its likeness to a pine cone, and English borrowed pineapple, an old word for a pine cone. Portuguese sailors then carried it to Saint Helena, Africa and India, and by 1600 it grew in most of the tropics.

In juice it's close to fresh. In syrup it's higher because of the added sugar.

A bowl has about 26 g of carbs, nearly all natural sugar.

How many calories in a whole pineapple?

Once it's peeled, a whole one gives about 900 g of fruit, which is around 450 kcal. Shared between four, that's a bit more than a bowl each.

Can you eat the pineapple core?

Yes. It's tougher and less sweet than the rest, but it's fine to eat. Blend it into a smoothie if you don't like the crunch.
