How many calories in strawberries
A bowl of strawberries has 80 kcal, about the same as a single biscuit.
Portion
To burn it off
Strawberries are mostly water with a bit of natural sugar and fibre, so you get a lot of fruit for very few calories.
A bowl is 80 kcal and a handful is 32. Even a whole punnet eaten straight from the box on a sunny afternoon doesn't add up to much.
It's usually what goes with them that counts. A dollop of cream or a scoop of ice cream will easily be more than the strawberries themselves.
Tips
- 1Have them with Greek yoghurt instead of cream.
- 2Freeze a punnet and eat them half frozen like a sorbet.
- 3Slice a handful over your porridge in the morning.
Where it comes from
The big strawberry we eat today was born in France in the 1700s. In 1714 Amédée François Frézier, a French officer sent to spy on Spanish forts in Chile, brought home five plants of the large Chilean strawberry. In French gardens it crossed with the Virginia strawberry from North America, and in 1766 the botanist Antoine Nicolas Duchesne worked out that this hybrid was a new fruit.
