Portion
To burn it off

Dragon fruit looks dramatic, pink and spiky outside, white or magenta with tiny black seeds inside. It tastes mild, somewhere between a kiwi and a pear.
A whole fruit is about 120 kcal, with 26 g of carbs, 2 g of protein and almost no fat. Half is about 60.
In Bali and Vietnam it's everywhere and cheap. In the UK it's an occasional treat from the exotic fruit shelf.
Tips
- 1Cut it in half and eat it with a spoon, no plate needed.
- 2Add the red variety to a smoothie bowl for colour and sweetness.
- 3Mix it with lime and mint for a quick fruit salad.
Where it comes from
Dragon fruit grows on a climbing cactus from southern Mexico and the Pacific side of Central America, where it is called pitaya or pitahaya. The French are said to have brought it to Vietnam around 1860, and its Vietnamese name thanh long, green dragon, is probably where the English name comes from. Vietnam is now one of the biggest exporters.
