Blueberries are small, sweet and mostly water, with natural sugar and a bit of fibre. Easy to snack on and easy to throw on top of things.

A bowl is 86 kcal and a handful is 29. A handful on your porridge every morning hardly moves the number.

Frozen ones are just as handy as fresh and often cheaper, so keep a bag in the freezer.

Tips

  1. 1Throw a handful of frozen ones into porridge while it cooks.
  2. 2Mix them into Greek yoghurt instead of a fruit yoghurt with added sugar.
  3. 3Buy the big frozen bags, they last for weeks.

Where it comes from

Blueberries are native to North America and were picked wild for thousands of years. Farming them began in New Jersey: USDA botanist Frederick Coville bred them with cranberry grower Elizabeth White, who had local pickers tag the best wild bushes for her. In 1916, at Whitesbog, they brought the first cultivated blueberries to market, so as a crop the fruit is only about a century old.
