Pasta is wheat and water, so it's mostly carbs with a decent bit of protein, 14 g a plate. On its own it's fairly plain in calories.

100 g dry from the bag is 370 kcal and cooks up to roughly a plate. The trouble is that most people pour in a lot more than 100 g, especially with spaghetti.

The sauce is where it moves. A tomato sauce adds a little, a creamy one or a load of cheese adds a lot more.

Tips

  1. 1Weigh the dry pasta a few times until you know what 100 g looks like in your hand. Most people pour closer to double.
  2. 2Pick tomato based sauces over creamy ones most nights.
  3. 3Throw a handful of veg into the pan to bulk it out.
  4. 4Grate the parmesan yourself, a little goes a long way.

Where it comes from

Nobody knows who made the first pasta. Marco Polo did not bring it from China: Italians were already eating it when he came home in 1295, so that story is a myth. In 1154 the Arab geographer al Idrisi wrote that Trabia, a town in Sicily, made a food of flour in the form of strings, dried it in the sun and shipped it to other parts of Italy and beyond.
