Raisins are grapes with the water taken out, so the sugar is packed into a tiny space. A box has 32 g of carbs, 1 g of protein and no fat.

That's why they're great before a long walk or a bike ride. It's also why a few handfuls disappear faster than you'd think.

The tiny lunchbox ones are much smaller than this, so check the side of the pack. A bigger box is a bigger number.

Tips

  1. 1Sprinkle a few over porridge instead of adding sugar.
  2. 2Tip a portion into a little pot instead of eating from the bag.
  3. 3Mix them with nuts so a handful lasts longer.

Where it comes from

Raisins are as old as winemaking, and the first were probably grapes that dried in the sun by accident. In ancient times the Phoenicians planted vineyards in Spain and Greece and the Armenians in Persia, and both traded raisins with the Greeks and Romans, who gave them as prizes at sporting events. California's first raisin crop in 1873 also happened by accident, after a heat wave dried the grapes on the vine.

Questions

Are raisins high in sugar?

Yes, for their size. A small box has about 32 g of carbs, nearly all of it sugar.

How many calories in two boxes of raisins?

About 240 kcal.

Are sultanas the same?

Near enough. They're dried grapes too, so count them about the same.

Do soaked raisins have fewer calories?

No. Soaking only adds water, so the same raisins have the same calories. They just get plumper, so a spoonful holds fewer of them.

Can dogs eat raisins?

No. Raisins and grapes can be very poisonous to dogs, even a few, so keep them out of reach and call a vet straight away if one gets eaten.
