Coconut water is the clear liquid from young coconuts, not the creamy milk. It's light, a bit sweet and has almost no fat.

A carton is 62 kcal and 15 g of carbs. That's much less than a carton of orange juice or a sports drink.

It's nice after the gym or on a hot day. Water does the job just as well, this is just the tastier version.

Tips

  1. 1Pick the plain one, not the versions with added fruit juice.
  2. 2Mix it half and half with water for a longer drink.
  3. 3Use it in a smoothie instead of juice.

Where it comes from

Coconut water comes from young coconuts, and the coconut palm was domesticated twice. A 2011 genetic study of 1,322 coconuts found one group from island Southeast Asia, around the Philippines and Indonesia, and another from southern India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Austronesian seafarers later carried Pacific coconuts all the way to Madagascar.
