Two thin slices of cooked ham on a white plate

Sliced ham is lean, so two slices are just 55 kcal, with 9 g of protein and 2 g of fat. That's about 28 a slice.

It's one of the lightest fillings for a sandwich. The bread, the butter and the cheese next to it count for much more.

Ham is salty, so it's worth keeping an eye on how much you have every day, not so much for the kcal.

Tips

  1. 1Pile on salad and mustard instead of butter and cheese.
  2. 2Roll slices of ham round cucumber or cream cheese for a snack.
  3. 3Pick a thicker sliced ham, it fills you up more.

Where it comes from

Curing a pig's leg is old. Around 160 BC the Roman writer Cato the Elder explained how to do it: bury the hams in salt for about twelve days, hang them in the wind for two, smoke them for two more, then rub them with oil and vinegar so neither moths nor worms will touch them. The English word ham first meant the back of the knee, from Old English hamm.
