To burn it off

Goulash is beef slow cooked with onions, paprika and often potatoes, somewhere between a soup and a stew. In Hungary it's a soup, at an Austrian ski hut it comes thick with a bread roll.
A bowl is 380 kcal, with 28 g of protein, 22 g of fat and 18 g of carbs. That's a good amount of protein for a bowl that warms you right up.
The bread, the dumplings or the soured cream on top are extra. With a roll on the side, count the roll separately.
Tips
- 1Use a lean cut of beef and skim the fat off the top at home.
- 2Add extra peppers and onions to make the pot go further.
- 3Have one roll with it, not the whole basket.
Where it comes from
Goulash began with the cattle herders of the Great Hungarian Plain, small groups of men who cooked meat and onions in a cauldron over an open fire. The name comes from gulyás, Hungarian for herdsman, so goulash is really herdsmen's meat. Paprika came in around the late 1700s, and in the 1800s the dish moved into city kitchens and became a symbol of Hungary.
