How many calories in ribs
A half rack of BBQ ribs has about 700 kcal, with 50 g of protein.
Portion
To burn it off

Ribs are fatty meat on the bone, cooked slowly and brushed with a sweet sauce. Delicious, messy and fairly heavy.
A half rack is 700 kcal, with 50 g of protein, 48 g of fat and 15 g of carbs, mostly from the sauce. A full rack, the one you order when you're very hungry, is 1,400.
Ribs rarely come alone. At the smokehouse or the pub there's usually chips, coleslaw and corn next to them, and they all count.
Tips
- 1Order the half rack and share a side instead of having one each.
- 2Swap the chips for corn on the cob or a side salad.
- 3Leave the extra sauce in the pot rather than on the plate.
Where it comes from
Slow cooked ribs belong to barbecue, and that word comes from the Caribbean. The Taíno people cooked meat on a wooden frame of four posts with sticks tied across the top, and the Spanish turned their word, barabicu, into barbacoa. The explorer Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo first put it in print in 1526, and from there it found its way into English.
