Five beef and pork meatballs on a white plate

Meatballs are minced beef and pork rolled with breadcrumbs, egg and onion, then fried or baked. Swedish ones with gravy and lingonberry, Italian ones in tomato sauce.

Five are 300 kcal, with 18 g of protein, 22 g of fat and 8 g of carbs. Easy to count, at 60 a ball.

What they come with is the bigger part: mash and gravy, a bowl of spaghetti or a sub roll. Count those on their own.

Tips

  1. 1Make them with lean mince or half turkey at home.
  2. 2Bake them instead of frying.
  3. 3Have them with veg or salad and a smaller portion of pasta or mash.

Where it comes from

In 2018 Sweden's official Twitter account said Swedish meatballs came from a recipe King Charles XII brought home from the Ottoman Empire in the early 1700s. Food historians disagreed: meatballs called frikadeller turn up in Swedish writing in 1650, long before his stay, and the word köttbullar appears around 1755. Meatballs are old in many countries, and nobody can be named as the inventor.
