How many calories in tzatziki
A portion of tzatziki has about 55 kcal, two heaped tablespoons.
Portion
To burn it off
Tzatziki is Greek yoghurt with grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil and a bit of dill or mint. Cool, sharp and on every table in Greece.
A portion is 55 kcal, with 4 g of fat, 2 g of protein and 2 g of carbs. Next to most dips that's very little.
The bread or the pitta you scoop it up with is where the calories are. A whole supermarket tub is several portions, so check how much you've had.
Tips
- 1Dip cucumber, carrot or pepper sticks instead of pitta.
- 2Use it in place of mayo in a wrap or on a jacket potato.
Where it comes from
Tzatziki comes from the Turkish cacık, a yoghurt dip with cucumber and garlic found all over the old Ottoman Empire. Cacık first appears in print in 1844, in the first Ottoman cookbook, described simply as yoghurt with cucumber and garlic. An older relative, yoghurt salads called jajaq, is already in a 10th century Baghdad cookbook.

Questions
Is tzatziki lower than hummus?
Yes, usually much lower, because it's mostly yoghurt and cucumber.
How many calories in a whole tub?
Depends on the tub. Count each two heaped tablespoons as about 55 kcal.
Is tzatziki good for protein?
Only a little, about 2 g a portion. It's a dip, not a meal.
Does tzatziki made with fat free yoghurt have fewer calories?
Yes, most of the fat comes from the full fat Greek yoghurt and the olive oil. With fat free yoghurt and just a drop of oil, a portion comes down to around 30 kcal.
How long does homemade tzatziki keep in the fridge?
About three to four days in a closed container. A bit of water often collects on top, you can pour it off or stir it back in.
