How many calories in a protein bar
A protein bar has about 220 kcal and 20 g of protein.
Portion
To burn it off
A typical protein bar is 220 kcal, with 20 g of protein, 22 g of carbs and 8 g of fat. That protein is the reason people buy them.
Calorie wise it's in the same area as a chocolate bar. The difference is what's inside, and the protein keeps you full for longer.
It's handy after the gym or on a day when lunch didn't happen. It doesn't make a snack lower in calories, it makes it more filling.
Tips
- 1Have it instead of a snack, not as well as one.
- 2Keep one in your gym bag so you don't raid the vending machine after.
- 3Pick a bar you actually like, or it ends up as a second snack.
Where it comes from
The protein bar's ancestor has a link to space. Pillsbury food scientist Howard Bauman, whose team made the first solid food eaten by a NASA-astronaut in 1962, created Space Food Sticks in the late 1960s, a chewy snack rod with balanced protein, carbs and fat sold on the back of the Apollo missions. They are seen as the forerunner of today's energy and protein bars.

Questions
Do protein bars help you lose weight?
Only if they replace something. They're 220 kcal each, so on top of everything else they add up.
Is a protein bar better than a chocolate bar?
The calories are similar, but 20 g of protein fills you up much better.
When should I eat a protein bar?
Whenever it suits you. After training or as a stopgap between meals is when most people find it useful.
Why does a low sugar protein bar still have so many calories?
The sugar is swapped for sweeteners, but the protein, fat and fibre still count. That's how a bar with very little sugar still comes to about 220 kcal.
