A small pile of thin golden potato crisps on a white plate

Crisps are thin potato slices fried in oil, so they're carbs and fat in roughly equal parts. Salt does the rest of the work.

A small bag from the multipack is 134 kcal. A big sharing bag is 804, which is six small bags, and it's rarely shared with five people.

The meal deal bag is fine. It's the open sharing bag at the pub or in front of the football that runs away.

Tips

  1. 1Buy the multipack instead of the sharing bag, the bag ends for you.
  2. 2Tip some into a bowl rather than eating them out of the bag.
  3. 3Try baked crisps or popcorn as a swap a few times a week.

Where it comes from

The famous story says chef George Crum invented crisps in 1853 at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York, to annoy a guest who sent his fried potatoes back for being too thick. Historians doubt it: an English doctor, William Kitchiner, printed a recipe for potatoes fried in shavings in 1817. Crum did help make them popular, and in the US they were sold as Saratoga chips.

Questions

How many calories in a sharing bag of crisps?

A 150 g sharing bag is about 804 kcal.

Are baked crisps lower?

Usually, because they use less oil. Check the bag, the gap varies.

Does the flavour change the calories?

Barely. Salt and vinegar or cheese and onion, it's the potato and oil that count.

Are kettle crisps higher in calories than normal crisps?

Only slightly, if at all. They're cut thicker and cooked in batches, which makes them crunchier, but per gram they land close to ordinary crisps.

Why are crisp bags so full of air?

It's nitrogen, not air. It keeps the crisps from getting crushed in transport and stops them going stale, so the bag is puffy on purpose.
