How many calories in sushi
Eight pieces of maki have about 300 kcal, most of it from the rice.
Portion
To burn it off

Eight maki are 300 kcal, with 55 g of carbs, 9 g of protein and 4 g of fat. The rice is most of it, and it's seasoned with a bit of sugar and vinegar.
One nigiri is about 50, so eight pieces come to 400. You get more fish that way, which means more protein.
The fried rolls and the ones with mayo on top are a different story. Tempura, cream cheese and spicy mayo all add more than the fish does.
Tips
Where it comes from
Sushi began as a way to keep fish rather than as a dish. Fish packed in salt and rice to ferment, called narezushi, came from the river lands of Southeast Asia and reached Japan with rice farming. In the Edo period cooks started using vinegar instead of waiting months, and around 1824 Hanaya Yohei is believed to have created nigiri in Edo, now Tokyo, as quick street food.
