To burn it off

Mussels are usually steamed in a pot with white wine, garlic, shallots and a bit of butter or cream. Moules marinière, in a pub as much as in Brussels.
A pot is 270 kcal, with 30 g of protein, 12 g of carbs and 10 g of fat. That's a lot of protein for very little, it's a properly lean dish.
The chips in moules frites and the bread for the sauce are extra and can easily double it. A creamy sauce adds a bit too.
Tips
- 1Pick the white wine version over the cream one.
- 2Mop up the sauce with one slice of bread, not the whole basket.
- 3Share the chips if you go for moules frites.
Where it comes from
The way much of France farms mussels comes with a legend. In 1235, the story goes, a shipwrecked Irishman called Patrick Walton drove wooden posts into the Bay of Aiguillon in western France to catch seabirds with nets, and found mussels growing on the posts instead. Those posts are called bouchots, and bouchot mussels are still grown on them today.
