Portion
To burn it off
Satay is marinated chicken grilled on skewers and served with peanut sauce. In Bali it's sate ayam off a smoky street grill, in the UK it's the starter everyone orders at the Thai or Malaysian place.
Five sticks come to 400 kcal, with 32 g of protein, 14 g of carbs and 24 g of fat. The chicken is lean, most of the fat is in the peanut sauce.
That makes it one of the more filling starters, thanks to all that protein. Each stick is about 80 kcal with its share of sauce.
Tips
- 1Dip the stick in the sauce rather than pouring it over.
- 2Share a plate as a starter and save room for the main.
- 3Have it with cucumber and a small portion of rice cakes rather than a big plate of rice.
Where it comes from
Satay probably began with street vendors on Java, inspired by the kebabs of Indian and Arab traders who arrived from the 1700s on. The word is thought to come from the Tamil catai, meaning flesh. A photo from around 1870 already shows a satay seller in Java with his shoulder pole, and by the late 1800s the dish had crossed to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
