How many calories in rice cakes
Two rice cakes have about 70 kcal, which is 35 each.
Portion
To burn it off
Rice cakes are puffed rice pressed into a disc. They're mostly air, which is why they're so light.
Two are 70 kcal, with 15 g of carbs, 2 g of protein and about 1 g of fat. Very little, but also not very filling on their own.
They're really a base for something else. Peanut butter, cheese or avocado on top are what make them a snack that lasts.
Tips
- 1Top them with cottage cheese or hummus for some protein.
- 2Spread nut butter thinly, it adds up faster than the cakes do.
- 3Have them with fruit so you're not hungry again in ten minutes.
Where it comes from
The rice cake grew out of puffed rice. In 1901 Alexander Anderson, a botanist at the New York Botanical Garden, saw heated starch burst into a light, puffed mass, and at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis he showed off rice puffed under pressure. Pressed rice cakes came much later, and brands like Chico San and Quaker made them a diet snack in the 1970s and 1980s.
