Where it comes from
Gado gado comes from western Java, most famously Jakarta, and probably started as a Sundanese dish. In Betawi, the old language of Jakarta, digado means eating something without rice, and gado gado is often read as mix mix. Its exact birth is unknown: theories range from Portuguese settlers in the 1700s to Chinese residents adapting the Javanese salad pecel.
